We are delighted to bring to you the IPH Magazine #15 as 2018 comes to its end. This issue discusses two notable contemporary topics: the implementation of alternative energy sources within hospitals and of integrated engineering management systems.

The latter is portrayed in the study "Implementation of Clinical Engineering Integrated Management System", which describes the experience of carrying through the management system at University of São Paulo's Clínicas Hospital, written by their team, it displays results and the impact on indexes. It is a case study that helps us understand the process of executing a new system and its outcomes.

The essay "Grid-tie photovoltaic systems: brief history and its implementation in the hospital environment" reveals one of the most up-to-date concerns of our history by discussing the ever-growing, however still in development, introduction of photovoltaic energy in hospitals. The text presents the costs and benefits of the technology and a case study. We hope this analysis might contribute not only for the expansion of its use but also, and chiefly, for the deliberation on how new energetic alternatives can be used in healthcare facilities.

Our magazine also debates another recurring question in currently researches, i.e. "humanization", in two pieces: "Humanizing the Hospital" and "Hospitality x Hospitable Hospitals x Humanization".

Finally, we had to save some space to reflect upon our own work, which leads us to the review of Irineu Breitman, whose health-related work was shown in an exclusively exhibition organized by the Institute in 2018. Also, part of his oeuvre is now housed at IPH's Collection. The article systematizes the first reflections that emerged while the curation of his exhibition, hoping to spark off curiosity so other researchers might explore the work of Irineu Breitman and other Brazilian architects from the 20th and 21th centuries.

We want the 2018 edition to give rise to new ideas, and therefore new dialogues, for the year to come.
  • Implementing an Integrated System for Clinical Engineering Management Alessandro de S. Mota, Cleiton V. Caldeira, Dennis V. do Nascimento, Diego H. L. da Silva Ribas, Fabio Martins Correa, Ferdinando Silvestre de Melo, Francisco Claudio Cardoso Gomes Benetti, Gustavo Borjes Sanjinez, Ilan A. Kimura, Katia K. Hara The lack of an integrated system for the management of medical and hospital equipment at the Medical School of University of São Paulo's Clínicas Hospital (HC-FMUSP) following Institutes: Central (ICHC); Orthopedics and Traumatology (IOT); Psychiatry (IPQ); Radiology (INRAD) and Children (ICR); as well as at the Suzano Auxiliary Hospital (HAS) hindered the management of clinical engineering techniques. After implementing the system, it was possible to inventory equipment and implement...
  • Grid-tie photovoltaic systems: brief history and its implementation in the hospital environment Eng Rafael Kotchetkoff Carneiro, Ana Carolina de Oliveira Sousa, Eng Lucas Teixeira, Eng Pedro Carneiro The study concerns the implementation of grid-connected photovoltaic systems, intended to reduce energy consumption and clean energy generation, in hospital environments. It takes into account the physical and electrical interventions required in hospitals for the correct implementation of the photovoltaic system, as well as conducting a brief financial study regarding the reduction in energy billing. Some case studies of design and implementation in hospitals in Brazil and in the world are...
  • Irineu Breitman's hospital design Erick Rodrigo da Silva Vicente This article presents part of the career and work of the architect Irineu Breitman, focusing on his projects for healthcare facilities. In 2018, IPH - Instituto de Pesquisa Hospitalar Arquiteto Jarbas Karman made the decision of housing part of his architectural collection to recover, organize and make his production known, which includes notable hospitals in the southern region of Brazil. Between October 30 and November 1, the Institute organized an exhibition of his work during the 8th...
  • Humanizing the Hospital Gúliti Ricardo Fagundes Nascimento This article aims to reflect on the concepts of humanization, focusing on the effective practices fostered by the National Humanitarian Assistance Policy (PNHAH). The conception of this project is increasingly conditioned in its great complexity, in the large amounts of standards to be followed and the search for the improvement of the physical quality of the space. In view of this, environmental comfort issues are disregarded in hospital settings, making them difficult to endure.
