Biography (Campanha, MG/April 13, 1917 – São Paulo, SP/June 2, 2008) Karman was a civil engineer (Poli – USP, 1941), an architect (Poli – USP, 1947), a professor and a hospital administrator. He got his master’s degree in Healthcare Architecture from Yale University (USA, 1952), attending the Hospital Infection course taught by Prof. Carl Walter, in Kitchener (Ontario), Canada, in 1952. In 1954, he founded the Brazilian Institute for Hospital Development and Research (IPH)1, responsible for financing the first College of Hospital Administration in Latin America (certified by the Ministry of Education in 1973), of which Karman was director and holder of the chair of Hospital Architecture. His writing activities included editing Hospital de Hoje Magazine and publishing numerous articles regarding health institutions, such as Planejamento de Hospitais², Iniciação à Arquitetura Hospitalar e Manutenção Hospitalar Preditiva³, Manual de Segurança Hospitalar⁴, Manutenção e Segurança Hospitalar Preditivas5. Karman’s research work regarding the hospital field is a reference in national and international publications, having taught numerous courses and lectures in Brazil and abroad. Karman designed and renovated hundreds of health institutions, such as Hospital de Clínicas de Pelotas (Pelotas, RS, 1956); Santa Mônica Hospital (competition, Belo Horizonte, MG, 1957); São Domingos Hospital (Uberaba, MG, 1960); São Luiz Hospital (Santos, SP, 1961); Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital (competition, São Paulo, SP, 1958); Galeão Air Force Hospital (Rio de Janeiro, RJ, 1967); Atibaia Hospital (Atibaia, SP, 1968); Instituto Nacional de Câncer e Queimados (Capiatá, Paraguay, 1984); the first major expansion of Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital (São Paulo, SP, 1979-1983); São Judas Tadeu Hospital – Pio XII Foundation (Barretos, SP, 1993); and Palmas General Hospital (Palmas, TO, 2006), among many others.
