IPH Magazine Nº18 Prof. Arch. Marcio Nascimento de Oliveira
IPH Magazine reaches its 18th edition, once again providing vital space for new perspectives on various subjects, reflecting the current situation in the field of healthcare architecture and engineering. This edition also marks the first time the content will be available in three languages, as beyond English and Portuguese it will also be published in Spanish from now on. This is an important step, loaded with symbolism, and should further increase the impact and scope of this important publication, allowing more readers to enjoy its content, and more Spanish-speaking authors to contribute to our next editions.

This issue begins with an article by Venezuelan researchers Sonia Bello and Valentina Moya, who deal with the theme of Therapeutic Gardens. At a time of rediscovery and revaluation of old design practices, and with the resignification of the presence of nature in healthcare settings, the authors propose a reflection on how gardens have increasingly become an integral part of hospital environments, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes. The concepts of biophilia and evidence-based design are discussed by the authors, with emphasis on their application in the conception of healthcare spaces.

In the second article, Prof. Elza Costeira presents a reflection on Hospital da Lagoa, in Rio de Janeiro, an iconic design by Oscar Niemeyer and Hélio Uchôa. In addition to highlighting aspects of its architecture, representative of the modern movement, the author observes how the building has been able to absorb new technologies over decades to then develop an analysis emphasizing the need for valorization and conservation of its original characteristics, aiming to ensure the continuity of its use and conservation.

Architect and Civil Engineer Ramon Sousa presents a part of his final civil engineering course thesis in the following article, which discusses a very important and current theme concerning the planning and execution of civil works in hospitals during its regular operation. As the author points out, this is a delicate activity that requires a lot of attention and a multidisciplinary look. The article presents a checklist with critical points and proposes an array of risks, aiming to demonstrate the actions that can be taken to mitigate difficult situation by professionals involved in the various phases of hospital renovations.

The next two contributions arrive from Uniceub, University of Brasilia, and both are related to the effects of Covid-19 pandemic. In the first article, the researchers use the Spatial Syntax theory to analyze the relationship between the network of federal highways and the spread of the virus throughout the country during the initial phase of the pandemic. The authors' main argument is that studies featuring the Spatial Syntax approach can collaborate to mitigate the effects of future pandemics. In the second one, the authors propose a reflection about the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on architecture and urbanism, more specifically in relation to housing features. Based on their own experiences and perspectives, the authors identify potential social implications that should significantly alter the current urban and architectural contexts.

Finally, architect Bruna Magalhães writes about her experience in the application of vinyl flooring on a Hemodynamics Unit, located in a hospital in Salvador, BA. After researching the normative aspects and the best installation practices with manufacturers, the author describes the process through which the researched unit went through, discussing some of the lessons she has learned.

The diversity of themes and approaches observed in the current edition shows IPH Magazine remains firm in its mission to provide authors and researchers in general with an open and democratic platform where they can share their studies and experiences with society. We renew our invitation for all those who produce technical and scientific knowledge concerning health settings and infrastructure to collaborate with IPH Magazine by sending articles for the next editions.
