Healthcare buildings, design, and use of diagrams Luciana de Medeiros - Renato de Medeiros

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present some refections on the field of architectural design, more specifcally on complex projects and potentialities of the use of diagrams in the design processes of buildings that provide healthcare services. To this end, a literature review was carried out on the theme and its related subjects, exemplifying, through illustrations extracted from the literature around hospital architecture, the use of functional diagrams in the initial stages of the project. It is considered that diagrams are essential tools for the creative process and the systematization of the quantity and diversity of variables involved in the design of healthcare facilities.

1. Introduction

The debate about architectural design in the face of the new challenges of contemporaneity has been a recurring topic in the studies carried out in recent years, especially due to new concepts and methodologies that infuence its practice. As a process or product, the project has multiple faces and development possibilities, intrinsic to its own confguration. Thus, the greater its complexity, the greater the number of variables involved in the stages of conception and elaboration of the corresponding graphic material, requiring certain artifces for its implementation. In this sense, the purpose of this article is to examine the theme of design complexity and the potential use of diagrams in the design processes of buildings that provide healthcare services. As these settings can be classifed in the category of complex buildings due to their own physical and functional requirements and characteristics, it is considered that diagrams are fundamental tools both for the creative process and for the systematization of the quantity and diversity of information related to the project?s demands.

The present study was carried out via a literature review about the main theme and its related subjects, along with an analysis of the illustrations done by J. C. Bross (2013) to exemplify the use of functional diagrams in the initial stages of a complex project. The main objective of this investigation, which is part of wider research on the subject, is to demonstrate the importance of architectural diagrams for the conception of the most complex and current projects.

2. Design, processes, and complexity in architecture

A project can be understood as the result of an efort, carried out in a certain period and with pre-established objectives, whether to create a product, a service, or a process (PMI, 2017). In the feld of architecture, while some researchers develop or carry out investigations focused on the fnal product, delivered through a series of documents (mostly graphic), seeking to evaluate diferent aspects such as formal, functional and/or representative solutions (BAKER, 2002; TAGLIARI, 2009), others focus on the stages of development of architectural design and its parts, strategies, tools, and methods (LAWSON, 2011), in order to unveil what goes on beneath the veil of design (BOUDON, et. al., 2001).

According to Andrade et al. (2011), there are several ways to describe the architectural design process and how it interferes with the production of the building. As pointed out by Vries and Wagter (1991) and Lawson (2011), this happens because there are characteristics that should be considered in investigations regarding design processes.
