Summary: A Panorama for the Safe Use of Medicines Mario Borges

The lecture "A Panorama for the Safe Use of Medicines" presented a panorama showing adverse events and mistakes concerning medicines in the USA and Brazil. Among the main factors, there are mistaken prescription, mistaken administration and ambulatory mistakes. Therefore, we have massive unnecessary expenses - billions of reais - fewer beds available; human suffering; jeopardize the reputation of an institution; social cost and judicial problems. The critical points regarding the medication system are lack of information about medicines and patients; communication problem in the staff; similar labels, packages and name of medicines. A systemic approach and a just culture contribute consistently to the prevention of mistaken medication.
